At this permablitz we will be developing a new composting setup at the farm using the Johnson Su method. This way of composting produces biologically rich aerobic compost after 9-12 months. The compost requires very little maintenance, not needing to be turned in the same way as a thermophilic compost set up does. The resulting compost is rich in microbes so is ideal to be used as an inoculant to support a healthy soil-food-web.
We will also be building another thermophilic compost bay that will heat up and produce biologically rich compost more quickly. We will be building this compost according to a precise recipe of greens and browns overseen by soil-food-web expert Becca Goodall.
As it will be time to prepare the garden for winter we will be clearing, mulching and planting green manures to support the soil-food-web over winter.
Mini workshops will include:
How to set up a thermophilic compost pile
How to set up and maintain a Johnson Su compost pile
Which green manures you can plant now and their benefits
This permablitz is organised as part of the partnership between Kentish Town City Farm and Permablitz London.
