Permablitz at Josiah Braithwaite Community Garden
Josiah Braithwaite Community Garden is a small community garden based at Nubian Life, a day centre for African and Caribbean older people with complex health and social care needs; residents and the local community learn about growing and the natural world.
This permablitz will be focussed on autumn work for small space growing to prepare for the cold months. We will be mulching, pruning, planting green manures in the planters/mini-forest garden area and planting up the recycled wicking planters with food for spring. We'll also be planting bulbs that will provide colour in early spring for the elders, many of whom have dementia and Alzheimer's.
Mini workshops:
Tips for preparing planters and pots for winter
Seeds you can plant now for spring food
Spring bulbs for colour, nectar/pollen and to eat
Permablitzes offer the chance to learn by doing: the mini-workshops explain the how and why for what we are doing and then you take the practical action so they provide a great way to learn. They are based on the principle of reciprocity so once you have been to three permablitzes you can apply to have one in your own space and apply to join the Introduction to Permablitz Design, a free introduction to permaculture design course that we will be running in September.
RSVP Essential: if you want to come along you need to let us know so we know numbers for lunch, which is provided, and so we can give you all the specific details. Contact us at info@permablitzlondon.com letting us know you want to join the Josiah Braithwaite Community Garden Permablitz.

A permaculture approach to designing a tiny home on water
Wednesday 12th November • 6.30pm-8.30pm
Cecil Sharp House, 2 Regent’s Park Rd, NW1 7AY
(nearest tube: Camden Town northern line)
This talk shares the journey of redesigning and fitting out a tiny narrowboat home: exploring how to zone a small space, build multi-functional features and integrate simple off-grid systems. Rooted in permaculture ethics and principles, the project was both a design challenge and a lifestyle experiment that required significant creative problem-solving.
The latest phase of the project has been to build a garden on the boat using recycled pallets to create wicking planters. This wouldn’t have been possible without the practical benefits of the reciprocal nature of permablitzing.
We’ll be sharing insights for anyone curious about:
Tiny space living & narrowboat life
Permaculture applied to tiny space and off-grid living
Ways to make upcycled furniture on a budget
